How Long Does Delta 8 Stay in Your System?
How long Delta 8 remains detectable depends mainly on how often you use it.
After a single use, a urine test comes back negative again for most people after 1 to 3 days. However, if you use Delta 8 regularly or daily over several weeks, it can remain detectable in urine for up to 30 days or longer after the last use.
The reason for this is THC-COOH. This is a breakdown product that your body forms when it metabolizes Delta 8. This is exactly the substance most drug tests look for.
Delta 8 THC, also called Δ8-THC, is a cannabinoid from the cannabis plant. However, it only occurs there naturally in very small amounts. Most of the Delta 8 sold today is made from CBD derived from hemp.
Chemically, Delta 8 is almost identical to Delta 9 THC.[1] The only difference lies in one small position in the molecule. As a result, Delta 8 usually has a somewhat milder effect than Delta 9. Nevertheless, the body processes both substances in almost the same way.
Both are broken down in the liver. In the end, this produces the same key substance: THC-COOH.[4] It's precisely this breakdown product that drug tests screen for.
Several factors determine how long Delta 8 remains detectable in the body.
The most important factor is frequency of use. People who use Delta 8 only occasionally often test negative again after just a few days. With daily use, the breakdown products accumulate in the body. As a result, tests can remain positive for several more weeks.
Body fat percentage also plays a role. THC-COOH is fat-soluble. This means it can be stored in fatty tissue and is only released slowly back into circulation. People with a higher body fat percentage may therefore test positive for longer.
Metabolism is also important. Age, genetics, activity level, and thyroid function can all influence how quickly the body processes the breakdown products.
The method of consumption also makes a difference. Edible products are processed through the liver first. This can produce more breakdown products than smoking or vaping the same amount.
Drinking a lot of water does not remove THC-COOH from the body any faster. It can dilute the urine, but modern labs check values such as creatinine and can detect heavily diluted samples.
Currently, there is no scientific evidence that detox products, special drinks, or home remedies speed up the breakdown of Delta 8. The only reliable factor is time.
The legal status of Delta 8 varies across Europe. In Germany and Switzerland, it is classified as a controlled substance. In other countries, it exists more in a legal gray area.
Does Delta 8 show up on a drug test?
Yes. Standard urine drug tests, such as those used by employers, authorities, or during traffic stops, detect Delta 8 in a manner similar to Delta 9 THC.
After consumption, the liver converts Delta 8 into Δ8-THC-COOH. This breakdown product is so similar to the breakdown product of Delta 9 that most tests cannot tell the difference.
A 2023 study in the Journal of Analytical Toxicology examined six different rapid urine tests. All tests reacted to Δ8-THC-COOH.[2] A second study from 2023 found Δ8-THC-COOH in 378 of 1,504 positive urine samples.[3]
How long Delta 8 remains detectable depends on the type of test and how frequently it is used. Since there are still only a few studies conducted directly on Delta 8 in humans, many estimates are based on studies of Delta 9 THC.[4] This makes sense, since both substances are processed very similarly in the body. However, it is not a fixed rule.
| Test Type | Single Use | Occasional Use, 2–4x per Week | Daily Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Urine | 1–3 days | 5–7 days | Up to 30 days |
| Blood | 12–24 hours | Up to 48 hours | Up to 72 hours |
| Saliva | 24–48 hours | Up to 3 days | Up to 29 days |
| Hair | Up to 90 days | Up to 90 days | Up to 90 days |
Urine tests are the most common. They are frequently used by employers and authorities.
Blood tests are often used in traffic stops or medical situations.
Saliva tests are also used in traffic stops, for example in several European countries such as Germany, France, and the Netherlands.
Hair tests are mainly used in forensic investigations or in security-sensitive professions.
